Weed and Seed crime prevention program
addresses issues affecting Liberty City and
Little Haiti such as delinquency, and
youthful crimes.
Weed & Seed is uniquely positioned to affect
crime trends and rates in Liberty City and
Little Haiti through R.E.S.P.E.C.T., its
ex-offender reentry program as well as
programs dealing with crime prevention
strategies for youth and adults, such PSN
and DEFY. This year the Youth Empowerment
Council will provide a forum for youth of
varying skill levels and experiences to
identify, discuss and implement solutions to
the gun-related violence in their schools
and their communities. The agency works
closely with local police departments, the
Public Defenders office, The State
Attorney’s Office, Department of Children
and families to implement crime prevention
activities, including workshops and
mentorship opportunities.
On Friday August 22, 2003 Weed and Seed held
its first Back To School Crime Prevention
Rally at the Joseph Caleb Center. Over 350
residents of Liberty City and Little Haiti
attended the event. Lieutenant Eric Castaner
of the Metro-Dade Police Department and
Shrita Sterlin, Miami-Dade Weed and Seed’s
Executive Director were the masters of
ceremony. Reverend Dr. Joaquin Willis of the
Church of Open Door and Lowell Crawford,
principal of McArthur Alternative School
delivered moving addresses to parents and
students, encouraging morality, family unity
and education. |
